Upper Merion Township Fire and Emergency Medical Service Department is a combination department that consists of volunteer and career fire/EMS personnel, ready to respond at all times. Our members respond to all types of emergencies out of five different stations within the township and provide outstanding emergency medical care and fire rescue services. With township fire companies dating back to 1920, the Upper Merion Township Fire and EMS continues to provide dedicated services to the citizens and visitors of Upper Merion.

The Fire and EMS Department is overseen by Chief of Fire and EMS, James Johnson, and functions as a branch of the Department of Public Safety, which also includes the police department and is overseen by Director and Chief of Police Blaine Leis.  Dr. Alvin Wang, Dr. Stephen Pulley and Dr Tyler McCardell serve  as the Medical Directors for the Fire and EMS Department, and oversees the training, certification, and care provided by the paramedics and emergency medical technicians.

The career firefighter/EMTs staff an apparatus capable of responding to fires, rescues, and emergency medical calls 24 hours a day. 7 days a week to supplement the volunteer response. Volunteer Firefighters still respond to calls 24/7, regardless of the career staffing. In May 2019, the township received control of the EMS service in the township as Lafayette Ambulance ceased functions after 57 years of exemplary service to the township. The township immediately added a second Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance for 24/7 coverage of the township. Working together, the career and volunteer members respond to approximately 1800 fire emergencies, and 4500 EMS emergencies annually.

Upper Merion Township is a full-service Fire and EMS Department.  Whether the community calls on us to put out a fire, help a family member needing emergency care, or need new smoke alarms in their home, you can count on Upper Merion Fire and EMS.
