Electric portable space heaters can provide warmth, but they are also a leading cause of residential fires if used improperly. Follow these safety tips to help prevent fires and injuries:

• Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, including furniture, curtains, bedding, and clothing
• Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet — never use extension cords or power strips
• Use heaters that have automatic shut-off and tip-over protection
• Never leave a space heater unattended or running while sleeping
• Turn heaters off and unplug them when leaving the room or home
• Keep heaters out of reach of children and pets
• Do not use space heaters to dry clothing or other items
• Make sure your home has working smoke alarms on every level

If you smell something burning or a heater malfunctions, turn it off immediately and call the Fire Department if needed.

Stay warm. Stay safe.
